Engineered vs Solid Hardwood

Ohio's climate makes
engineered the right call for most homes.

Solid hardwood is the benchmark — but it doesn't like moisture variation, can't go over concrete, and has limits on plank width. Engineered hardwood is real wood with a plywood or HDF core that makes it dimensionally stable. Better for basements, slab foundations, and Ohio's humidity swings between winter and summer.

Engineered Hardwood

Real hardwood veneer bonded to a stable core. Handles moisture variation. Can go over concrete with moisture barrier. Comes in wider planks (5"–9") that solid can't reliably match. Refinishable — wear layer thickness determines how many times. Right for most Westlake homes.

Most Recommended

Solid Hardwood

3/4" thick top to bottom, can be sanded and refinished many times. The benchmark for authenticity. Requires nail-down over wood subfloor, not appropriate for concrete or below-grade applications. Right for above-grade installations with wood subfloors.

Common Questions

What Westlake homeowners ask about hardwood.

What's the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?
Solid is one piece of wood 3/4" thick — can be sanded many times, nail-down over wood subfloor only. Engineered is a real hardwood veneer over a stable core — handles moisture variation better, can go over concrete, comes in wider planks. For most Westlake homes, especially those on slab or with humidity variation, engineered is the right call.
Can hardwood go in my basement?
Solid hardwood cannot go below grade — moisture from the slab will cause it to warp over time. Engineered hardwood over a properly treated concrete slab with a moisture barrier can work. We assess your specific basement during the quote visit.
How do I choose the right species and stain?
We bring sample boards to your home — different species (white oak, maple, hickory), different stain options, different finish sheens (matte, satin, semi-gloss). You hold them in your actual space against your actual walls before making any selection.
How long does hardwood installation take?
Engineered hardwood needs to acclimate in your home for 48–72 hours before installation. Plan for a delivery window, then a 1–2 day installation. We schedule both and give you a firm timeline, not a range.
In Westlake Specifically

A number of Westlake's 1970s and 80s homes have original oak hardwood under the carpet in the living room and bedrooms — it's worth checking before committing to a replacement install. We pull a corner and tell you honestly what's there. If it's refinishable, we can bring it back. If you're adding hardwood where there isn't any, we can tie new material in to the existing floor so the transition disappears. Engineered is almost always the better call in Ohio — seasonal humidity causes solid wood to move more than most homeowners expect.
