Solid hardwood is the benchmark — but it doesn't like moisture variation, can't go over concrete, and has limits on plank width. Engineered hardwood is real wood with a plywood or HDF core that makes it dimensionally stable. Better for basements, slab foundations, and Ohio's humidity swings between winter and summer.
Real hardwood veneer bonded to a stable core. Handles moisture variation. Can go over concrete with moisture barrier. Comes in wider planks (5"–9") that solid can't reliably match. Refinishable — wear layer thickness determines how many times. Right for most medina homes.

Medina's older homes near the historic square are some of the more interesting hardwood projects in the area — original oak or maple under carpet in the living and dining rooms, sometimes in excellent shape under decades of padding. We check what's there before we quote. If it's refinishable, bringing it back is almost always the better option than covering it again. For Medina's newer subdivision homes, upgrading from contractor laminate to engineered hardwood is the more common path. Engineered handles Ohio's humidity variation better than solid, and we can run it through the whole main level in one project.
